Sunscreen is the only product in grooming with an outsized effect on how skin looks in twenty years and a well documented effect on cancer risk, and it is the product men are least likely to use. That gap is worth understanding properly, because it is not explained by men not caring about their appearance. Men spend heavily on grooming. They just do not spend it here.
What follows is the mechanism, the objections in the order men actually raise them, and what resolves each.
What ultraviolet is actually doing
Two bands of ultraviolet reach the ground and they behave differently.
UVB is the shorter wavelength. It is absorbed mainly in the epidermis, it causes sunburn, and it directly damages DNA by forming abnormal bonds between adjacent bases. It varies enormously with season, latitude, time of day and cloud cover. In the UK it is a spring to autumn concern, concentrated in the middle of the day.
UVA is the longer wavelength. It penetrates to the dermis, where collagen and elastin live. It generates reactive oxygen species that damage those structural proteins and activate enzymes that break them down further. It is present at broadly similar levels throughout the day and throughout the year, it passes through cloud, and it passes through ordinary window glass.
That last point does most of the work in this article. UVA is why one sided facial ageing is documented in people with long driving careers, and why the case for daily protection is not seasonal.
UVB burns you. UVA ages you. Only one of them announces itself.
Photoageing accounts for the large majority of the visible change most people attribute to getting older, which we take apart in what actually changes in men's skin and when. Deep lines, uneven pigmentation, broken capillaries and leathery texture are largely cumulative ultraviolet damage rather than the passage of time itself.
Objection one, it feels greasy and leaves a cast
This is the objection that comes first and it is the most legitimate, because it is usually based on real experience with the wrong product.
Most men's only exposure to sunscreen is a high SPF beach or family formulation. Those are engineered to survive water, sand, towelling and heat. That means high filter loads, heavy emollients and film formers that leave a tacky finish. It is a completely different product category from a daily facial sunscreen, in the same way that a waterproof coat is a different category from a shirt.
In ingredient terms, here is what determines how a sunscreen feels.

The UK and EU permit a broader set of modern organic filters than some other markets, which is why a daily facial sunscreen bought here can be considerably lighter than the memory most men are working from. If you have oily skin, look for a fluid or gel with silicones or a matte finish. If you have dry skin, a lotion with glycerin and squalane will double as your moisturiser and remove a step.
Objection two, it is a faff and I forget
This is a habit design problem, not a motivation problem. Sunscreen has no immediate feedback loop. Nothing happens when you apply it and nothing happens when you do not, for about thirty years.
The fix is habit stacking. Attach it to something you already do without deciding to.
- Put it where the thing you already do happens. Next to the razor, not in a drawer.
- Apply it as the last step of shaving, every time, without evaluating the weather. Weather evaluation is a decision, and decisions are where habits die.
- Use a formulation you actively like the feel of, even if it costs more per application. A product you enjoy putting on gets put on.
- If you drive or sit by a window, treat it as an indoor product. That is the point of UVA.
Objection three, I do not burn
Burning is a UVB endpoint. It tells you nothing about UVA exposure, which produces no acute signal at all. A man with skin that tans easily and rarely burns is still accumulating dermal damage, and in richer skin tones the more visible consequence is often pigmentation rather than lines, which we cover in grooming for darker skin tones.
Melanin does provide meaningful intrinsic protection, and skin cancer incidence differs substantially across skin tones. It is not equivalent to a sunscreen, and cancers in darker skin are more often diagnosed later and in less sun exposed sites, which makes self examination the more important habit rather than a less important one.
Objection four, vitamin D
This is raised often and deserves a straight answer. Sunscreen use in real world conditions has not been shown to cause vitamin D deficiency at a population level, largely because people apply far less than the laboratory test amount and miss areas entirely. In the UK, ultraviolet is insufficient for vitamin D synthesis through the winter months regardless of what you wear, which is why supplementation guidance exists at all. Deliberate unprotected sun exposure is not a sensible strategy for vitamin D, and the NHS sets out the current UK position.
The part almost everyone gets wrong, the amount
SPF is measured in a laboratory at a defined application density. Real world application is typically a fraction of that, and protection does not fall proportionally, it falls faster. A high number applied thinly can deliver less protection than a lower number applied properly.
Practical guidance for a face, neck and ears is roughly two finger lengths of product, or a generous half teaspoon. Most men use a quarter of that. The relationship between the number, the dose and the actual protection is set out fully in what the SPF number actually means.
Where men miss
- Ears, entirely, almost universally.
- The back of the neck, particularly with short hair.
- The scalp along a parting or across a thinning crown, which is a high exposure site discussed in our feature on hair loss.
- The lower lip, which is a common site for sun related damage and needs a lip product with a filter.
- The hands, which age visibly and get direct exposure on a steering wheel.
Reapplication, realistically assessed
Filters degrade with exposure, and product is removed by sweat, water and touch. Reapplication every two hours is the standard advice for sustained outdoor exposure and it is correct in that context. For a man who walks to a train, works indoors and walks home, one morning application plus a top up before any extended time outside is a realistic protocol that people actually follow.
The perfect protocol applied never is worth less than an imperfect one applied daily. That is the whole argument of this journal in one sentence, and it applies here more than anywhere.
