The under-eye area is a small landscape, not one problem
The phrase “dark circles” makes several visibly different things sound interchangeable. Around the eye, they are not. The lower lid sits over a changing landscape of skin, fat, muscle, blood vessels and the bony edge of the eye socket, known as the orbit. A camera-facing description such as tired-looking, hollow, dark or puffy may refer to any one of those layers, or to the way light meets them together.
Under-eye skin is comparatively thin and moves constantly with blinking and expression. It also has less visual camouflage than the cheek: there is no beard density, little texture and usually no tan-free expanse around it to break up contrast. That makes colour shifts, a small hollow and a slight amount of swelling read strongly in a mirror or photograph.
For men, the visible effect can be amplified by grooming contrast rather than anatomy alone. A close shave may make the lower face brighter and smoother while the under-eye area remains unchanged. Thick brows can frame the eye more heavily. Facial hair can pull visual weight downwards. None of these creates an under-eye circle, but each can alter how noticeable one seems.
The useful starting point is not “which eye cream fixes dark circles?” It is “what is making this area look darker today?” Look for whether the effect changes with lighting, whether it is brown or blue-grey in tone, whether it comes with swelling, and whether it has been stable for a long time. Those clues separate a cast shadow from colour in the skin or a temporary change in volume.
This is an appearance guide, not a diagnosis of an eye or skin condition. A new, one-sided, painful or otherwise concerning change belongs in an appropriate clinical conversation rather than a grooming label.
Shadow: when the orbital structure is doing the talking
A shadow is not pigment. It is an absence of reflected light. Beneath the eye, the most familiar shadow often follows the transition between the lower lid and upper cheek. Depending on face shape, fat distribution and the angle of the light, that transition can look like a dark semicircle or a narrow groove. It may be visible even where the skin itself is evenly coloured.
Orbital structure matters because the eye sits back within a socket. The lower orbital rim, the projection of the cheek and a natural hollow beneath the eye can create a boundary that overhead light exaggerates. Bathroom lighting, desk lighting and a phone held below face height are particularly good at making a structural shadow look more dramatic. A front-facing, diffused light may make the same face look substantially different without changing the skin at all.
A quick visual distinction is useful: if the dark area changes sharply when the light source moves, shadow is likely a major contributor. If the colour remains in broadly the same patch under different light, pigmentation or visible vessels may be contributing too. Most real faces are mixed cases, so this is a reading tool rather than a verdict.
A cosmetic product can soften the look of a shadow only by changing what the viewer sees at the surface. A tinted product can reduce contrast; light-reflecting particles can redirect light; a moisturising film can make fine surface texture look less dry. None changes the depth of the eye socket, the location of the orbital rim or the geometry that casts the shadow. That limit is important because a structural feature can be entirely ordinary while remaining resistant to a routine.
Decision rule: If darkness changes mainly with light direction, read it first as shadow. If it stays brown, blue-grey or purple across lighting, look beyond shadow. If swelling comes and goes, treat it as a separate visual factor.
Pigmentation and visible vessels can look similar from a distance
Colour beneath the eye is often described as darkness, though the colour itself may vary. Brown-toned discolouration tends to read differently from blue, violet or grey tones, particularly in daylight. Brown can reflect pigment within the skin. Blue-grey or violet can arise when blood vessels and underlying tissue show through thin skin, with light scattering adding to the effect. These are visual descriptions, not a way to establish a medical cause.
Skin tone changes how contrast is perceived. On deeper skin tones, a brown or grey-brown area may be more apparent than a bluish cast. On lighter skin tones, visible vessels and redness may be more conspicuous. Either way, the eye area invites over-reading because it is thin, mobile and set beside the white of the eye, which makes small shifts in colour feel pronounced.
Lighting again matters. Warm indoor bulbs can make brown tones seem deeper. Cool screens and overhead light can emphasise blue-grey tones and the contours that accompany them. Photography adds another layer: automatic exposure may brighten the face unevenly, while a high-contrast phone image can deepen a small under-eye hollow.
Cosmetic products can work with colour, rather than alter its source. A sheer tint, a correcting tone or a lightly reflective finish can make a patch look less distinct by reducing contrast with surrounding skin. Hydrating textures can improve the appearance of surface dryness, which sometimes makes colour look harsher. A product cannot reliably determine whether a colour change comes from pigment, vessels, lighting or structure, and its effect will be cosmetic rather than a change to underlying anatomy.
The Journal’s guide to ingredient labels is useful here because a long ingredient list does not reveal an outcome by itself. For under-eye products, look first at whether the formula is untinted, tinted or designed to reflect light. Those are different visual jobs, whatever the packaging promises.
Why puffiness often looks worse in the morning
Under-eye puffiness is about volume and fluid appearance, not necessarily darkness. The lower lid has loose tissue, and small shifts in fluid can be conspicuous after hours spent lying down. On waking, that extra fullness can cast a shadow beneath it, creating the familiar pairing of a puffy bag above and a darker-looking line below. One feature can therefore make another appear more severe.
Sleep disruption can change how the face looks the next morning, partly because tiredness is written onto expression, skin surface and perceived colour as well as onto the eye area itself. Salt and alcohol can also be followed by a puffier-looking face in some people, with the under-eye area making that change obvious. These are common observations about temporary appearance, not a promise that any one factor explains every morning.
Hay fever can be another relevant context. Watery or irritated eyes, rubbing and disrupted sleep can make the area look more swollen or more coloured than usual. In that situation, it is easy to blame a grooming product when the visible change has a different immediate context. Avoid treating a label as a diagnostic tool.
What matters visually is variability. Puffiness that is more pronounced on some mornings and settles later has a different pattern from a stable lower-lid contour present in every photograph. The first suggests a fluctuating surface appearance. The second may be part of facial structure, age-related change or a long-standing tissue contour. Neither pattern is a character flaw, and neither is settled by the phrase “looking tired”.

What an eye cosmetic can change, and what it cannot
Eye products are often sold with language broad enough to cover several concerns at once: dark circles, bags, fatigue, brightness, lines and firmness. Those claims can make a single jar sound like an answer to very different visual mechanisms. Read the product as a surface tool. Its likely visible effects come from hydration, a temporary film on the skin, tint, light reflection or a cooling sensation. These may change how the area presents, especially in close-up.

Words such as depuffing and brightening should therefore be read as appearance language. They do not tell you which type of under-eye feature is present, how durable any visible effect will be, or whether the issue is structural. A cooling applicator may feel pleasant, but sensation is not the same as an anatomical change.
Be cautious with strong fragrance and with formulas that sting, particularly because the eye area is close to the eye itself. A product that repeatedly makes the skin feel uncomfortable is not earning its place through a dramatic claim. This is not a treatment recommendation. It is a limit on what cosmetic language can reasonably mean.
Ingredient card: light-reflecting pigments
Not every useful under-eye ingredient is an active. In a product intended to change what is visible immediately, pigments and light-modifying powders may be more relevant than a long list of extract names. They do not solve a structural hollow or establish why a person looks puffy. They alter the optical reading of the surface.

On an ingredient list, colour additives may appear near the end, while mica and other light-modifying materials may be named according to the formula. Their presence tells you more about a product’s immediate cosmetic strategy than a vague promise to energise the eye area. A clear or untinted gel may prioritise feel and surface hydration instead; it cannot provide colour correction it does not contain.
This is also why comparing an eye cream with a concealer-like product as though they make the same claim leads nowhere. One may be a skincare texture, the other a cosmetic camouflage tool, and some combine both roles. The label format matters more than the word “eye”.
When the cause is structural, not a routine failure
A stable under-eye hollow, a pronounced lid-to-cheek boundary or a naturally prominent orbital rim can be visible on a well-rested face. The same is true of some long-standing darker areas. If a feature appears consistently in varied lighting, across months or years, and remains after ordinary fluctuations in sleep or hydration, it may be more structural than situational. That does not make it abnormal. It means the face has a persistent contour.
Structural is not a synonym for ageing, poor self-care or a problem to be corrected. Facial anatomy varies widely. In men, a more angular brow and cheek structure, lower facial hair contrast or a leaner facial appearance can make the under-eye transition seem sharper. Conversely, a fuller lower lid can create a permanent-looking bag even where there is no morning fluctuation. Grooming language often treats these as defects because it is built around before-and-after imagery. Anatomy is not obliged to behave like a product demonstration.
The practical benefit of identifying a structural component is expectation control. Moisture can make dehydrated surface texture look better. Tint can alter colour contrast. Light-reflecting pigments can make a shadow less legible in selected lighting. None of these changes the architecture that generates the shadow. If the feature is structural, a routine has not failed by leaving it in place.
